ARAB Organisation for Industrialisation and the state-owned company and the General Company for Silos and Storage have signed a contract on 7 June 2014 to build wheat silos in Egypt, according to the Emirates News Agency. The first silo will be built in Damietta city, and will have a capacity of 60,000 tonnes. The second silo, with a storage capacity of 70 tonnes, will be contructed in Amiriya district in Alexandria. These wheat silos are part of a larger project handled by the UAE which plans to create more wheat storage in 17 provinces across Egypt by November. Once complete all the silos will have a combined total of 1.5 million tonnes in capacity.
The new buildings will prevent loss of wheat in Egypt which can run up to billions in US dollars annually. According to Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of State, Head of the Coordination Office for U.A.E. Projects in Egypt, the increased storage will ensure food security and reduce Egypt’s wheat import.
