WEI is said to support the company’s distribution partners and serve customers throughout China and Taiwan who rely on OMAX equipment for the fast, precise cutting of various materials, including exotic alloys, glass, rubber, stone and wood.
And since it involves one of the biggest markets for metalworking equipment, China and Taiwan, IMNA interviewed William Wei in an effort to learn more about the new sales manager. Its plans and strategies including perspective about today’s market in Asia.
IMNA: Can you tell us about your operations in Asia, when did it begin; do you have offices in China and Taiwan? If yes, do these facilities/offices offer the same abrasive waterjet solutions, OMAX designs, and manufacturers at its headquarters in Kent, Washington?
William Wei: OMAX started to do business in Greater China region (including mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan) since early 2000’s. We work with our authorised distributors in this region to provide the same abrasive waterjet machines that are designed and manufactured at OMAX’s headquarters in Kent, Washington.
IMNA: As the new Sales Manager for China and Taiwan, what areas do you see as requiring more focus, and what are you bringing to the company that will ensure you meet these objectives?
William Wei: I will focus on promoting OMAX’s proprietary technologies in Waterjet Motion Control, Precision Cutting, Direct Drive Pump and high product quality that can help us differentiate from the local and other major global players, and create higher values for the customers. I will also work with our partners to provide even better pre- and after-sales services to our customers in this region.
My 20 years’ experiences in international sales/marketing and product marketing, and my balanced working experiences in the U.S. and Asia will help leverage the resources and talents at OMAX’s headquarters to work with our distributors to develop and serve the market better. I’ll also bring the market’s needs back to the OMAX headquarters in the U.S., so that, we can continue to improve and develop new products that meet and exceed the market’s needs and expectations in the Greater China region.
IMNA: How do you perceive the current business in Asia for waterjet cutting technology?
William Wei: Asia is one of the most dynamic and attractive markets for waterjet cutting technology in terms of applications, market size and competitions. There are a lot of opportunities as well as challenges. To play in the Asia market will help OMAX become even better, and then bigger. OMAX is already a leading manufacturer in the U.S. market. We will become a global leader in this field.
IMNA: Now that not only abrasive waterjet are used during fabrication of machine parts but also laser cutting, which is becoming a preferred method when the materials being cut are sensitive to the high temperatures. What are your thoughts on this?
William Wei: Actually, when the materials are sensitive to high temperatures, waterjet cutting is better than laser cutting, because it is a cold supersonic abrasive cutting technology without heat affected zone and without any material distortion, while laser cutting is a thermal process which creates heat affected zone and may also cause material distortion. Laser cutting is usually used when the materials are thin (< 0.25”), and laser can cut only non-reflective metals, while waterjet cutting can cut thin as well as very thick materials, and can cut almost all kinds of materials – metals, stones, glass, composites…
IMNA: The Asian market is obviously vital in expanding the scale of a business. Could you comment on how OMAX® is stepping up its approach to releasing advanced abrasive waterjet cutting technology in this market?
William Wei: We will focus on promoting OMAX’s unique technologies and creating higher values for the customers. At the same time, we will work with our distributors to continue improve the pre- and after-sales services to better serve our customers in this region.
IMNA: Other viewpoints are welcome besides the questions above
