CONSUMPTION of premium and super-premium distilled spirits continues to pick up in the US. This is one of the positive outcomes of the country’s recovering economy. However, not the same can be said for the other segments of the alcoholic beverages.
In the 2014 Liquor Handbook, premiumisation has got consumers drinking less, although better. Premiumisation is a trend in which companies market and sell premium products, which in turn give them higher margins and better profits. Some of the segments that failed to catch on are blended whiskey and gin.
Smaller sales growth was achieved in 2013, with the industry posting 2.2% growth in volume at 210 million nine-litre cases.
