The plastics industry in eastern India is growing at the rate of 9% per annum as against 14% of India. This shows the tremendous growth potential in eastern region especially West Bengal, according to All India Plastics Manufacturers’ Association (AIPMA). The eastern Indian states of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odish and Assam mark the entry of potential markets for growth of plastic Industry of India. The per capita consumption of eastern Region is 2.8 kg versus national average of per capita consumption of 8 kg.
The region will also have strategic advantages in the near future as both upstream and downstream is coming up in the region coupled with lower labour cost and investor-friendly approach by most state governments of the region. The Assam Gas Cracker Project and Brahmaputra Cracker & Polymer Limited are projects that are expected to enhance the eastern states of India’s plastics production for it to become the hub for future growth, according to Dr. Asutosh Gor, President of AIPMA, during the inauguration of its full-fledged regional office at Kolkata. www.aipma.net
