EFLA HyperPure Line meets EU PAH regulation

FRUTAROM Health BU has recently unveiled its EFLA(R) HyperPure Line, and will showcase this latest product at Fi Europe in Paris.

The natural ingredients line, developed in response to new regulations pertaining to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other contaminants in food supplements, consists of a range of extracts. The extracts are derived from raw materials specially susceptible to contamination by PAHs and produced using the proprietary HyperPure technology.

In addition to PAHs, the company’s patented process technology, EFLA HyperPure, enables a highly selective removal of unwanted contaminants such as pesticides and unsaturated fatty acids that undergo rapid peroxidation, thereby degrading other ingredients and producing undesired by-products such as heptanol.

The 2015/1933 PAH regulation published by the EU covers maximum levels of PAHs in food supplements to provide high level of human health protection.

Matthias H. Kreuter Ph.D., CSO of Frutarom Health, noted the difficulty among many botanical ingredients in complying with this new regulation.

“Until now, only a few techniques enabling the removal of contaminants are available, for example application of supercritical CO₂, activated charcoal, and hexane. But these techniques involve non-selective processes that can cause the loss of active ingredients and can be harmful to the environment or pose a risk of toxicity,” Mr Kreuter said.
