July 1 2013 marked Croatia’s first day as a member of the State of the European Union (EU), but since 2006, food safety authorities there have been participating in EFSA’s Pre-Accession Programme, enabling experts to participate in EFSA forums and seminars and trainings on topics that include risk communication; data collection and analysis; the role of EFSA’s Advisory Forum; microbiological risk assessment; health claims; and emerging risks.

The joint activities with EFSA have enabled Croatian experts to become familiar with developments in the EU that relate to food safety and to exchange views and opinions with colleagues from EFSA and EU Member States. For example, the Croatian Food Agency (HAH) is a partner of the EU’s Total Diet Studies project, which aims improve the quality of exposure assessment data collected across the EU, in order to enhance the region’s consumer protection measures.
