Many industries in the Middle East are relying on the region's thriving packaging industry as packaging plays a distinct role in promoting the products in the local and international markets. The food sector alone accounts for 40% of all packaging applications, while the beverage sector's share has reached 18%. Among the Arab countries, Egypt has seen tremendous growth in its plastics industry, especially in the area of packaging. Both plastics manufacturing and the packaging sectors are working closely as they strive to prosper and deliver competitive products. With Egypt's projected increase in exports due to existing trade agreements, the packaging sector is expected to record 20% annual growth in the next three years.

Such positive expectation was seen in The Arab African Packaging, Plastic and Processing Exhibition (Apex) 2009, organised by Middle East Trade Fairs and held on 9-12 April 2009 at Cairo International Convention and Exhibition Centre. Since 2005, this annual event has been the showcase of innovative products from exhibitors coming from around the world. Indeed, the show has taken a special place in the region's manufacturing centre as it introduces the latest design trends and innovative technologies on packaging, plastics and food processing. This year, most of the exhibitors came from Taiwan, Germany, India, Canada and Egypt. The exhibition venue with 180 exhibitors covered 4,000sq.m. Around 7,000 visitors registered. Many packaging and processing companies showcased their products in the Cairo show. Some of the key exhibitors were involved in the paperboard manufacturing providing corrugating equipment, paper drilling machines, self-adhesive paper, oxmaking machinery and pulp. The packaging materials sector presented a wide range of products such as adhesives, crates, foils, glass, plastic and polypropylene materials; while the food processing companies showed off their range of cans, mixers, pumps, dairy equipment and dispensing tool. Also present were representatives from the labelling industry that promoted machines for bar coding, hot foil machinery, label presses, ink jet systems, security labels and digital label printing machines.

Some of the major companies that exhibited their innovative products include Italy's Bertoli with its high-pressure homogenisers, Taiwan's Chung Shan Machinery Works Co. with its packing machinery, and Egypt's Dani Pack and Ecobil for food industry equipment. Overall, the Apex 2009 exhibition was a big success. The trade show continues to expand and attract more visitors and exhibitors annually. Victrix's reliable adhesives

Jovanka Pizzo, President for Special Adhesive Products of Italy-based Victrix Group, discussed the company's structure, its range of products and his feedback about the show. Pizzo said Victrix participated for the first time in this Cairo fair, although the company was able to first attend a trade show in Dubai. After receiving positive feedback, and also as a means to further increase its exposure in the Middle East, it exhibited at Apex. Victrix has three product lines in such categories as packaging, labelling and adhesives. It manufactures double- sided cushion tapes for printing plate mounting; double-sided adhesives used mostly to bond surfaces of different structures, which are made of materials such as PP, PET, PLA and foams of different thickness. Also available is its selection of artificial leather and fabrics like snakeskin, crocodile, wood and woven materials for decorative purposes; plastic films for the converting industry designed for any traditional printing process like flexo, letterpress, offset, silk screening and hot stamping.
