The Dubai Municipality uses a unique global system for monitoring local and imported food which tracks a food item from port to storage and handling. It can provide clear and accurate statistics on the type of food, results of samples, risk ratios in the material, and dates of sampling. According to Eng. Hussain Nasser Lootah, director general of Dubai Municipality, food items should be registered under the regulatory system, which makes it easy for inspectors to check data about merchants, shipment, code number, food additives and where the product is in the country, he said.
“The municipality began applying new specification on the Law of the food label and the new law of the validity period in GCC adopted by GSO, ESMA and other food regulatory organisation in the country,' he added. The municipality has completed the registration of 25,547 food items.
The Dubai Municipality has strict guidelines particularly for imported goods, especially since 90 per cent of Dubai's food comes from other countries. Recently it organised a program for prominent Thai food export companies to stress the issue of food safety. About 2.2 per cent of its food imports come from Thailand.
