Essar Steel India (EStIL) bagged a prestigious award from Maruti Suzuki (MSIL), the largest car manufacturer in India, for extending “extraordinary support” on localization of steel. During the three-day Vendor Conference organized this month by Maruti at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the award was presented to Essar Steel by Keiichi Asai, Director & Managing Executive Officer, Engineering, MSIL, for displaying exemplary performance in facilitating arrangement of steel as import substitution input, thereby helping Maruti reduce overall operational and lead time and inventory costs.The theme of the conference this year was ‘New Matrix: Sustain, Strategize, Succeed’. Sudhir Sharma, RSM – North, Downstream & Automotive, received the shield on behalf of Essar at a ceremony held at Sunway Resort, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on May 3, 2013.
During the conference, Maruti announced its plans to produce 1.24 million cars in the current financial year. Going beyond its presence at Gurgaon and Manesar in Haryana, Maruti intends to commence production at its upcoming plant in Gujarat by early 2016; the new plant will have the capacity to manufacture 0.8 million cars per year.
