FDA takes stand on bisphenol A

Source:Actega Release Date:2013-07-08 207
Food & Beverage
Based on its ongoing safety review of scientific evidence, the US Food and Drug Administration finds Bisphenol A (BPA) as safe. Likewise, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (RCOG), whilst warning pregnant women to avoid foods in plastic packaging, has agreed that chemicals in packaging are too low to pose health risk

BREMEN, Germany – In its website, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has mentioned Bisphenol A (BPA) as safe, based on its ongoing safety review of scientific evidence. BPA, a chemical component present in polycarbonate plastic used in the making certain beverage containers and food can liners, has been considered a health risk as amounts of the chemical can trasfer to food or beverage. However, the FDA has ruled out the risk so far.

In the UK, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (RCOG) also said that exposure to BPA, phthalates or other chemicals from packaging is minimum and definitely too low in order to present a risk. However, the RCOG advises pregnant women to reduce or avoid food in plastic packaging as a preventive safety measure.

Preventive safety measures are also made by those who opt for glass jars that are sealed with the PVC-free metal vacuum closure – featuring PROVALIN? as sealing compound. Glass is regarded as the safest means of packaging for food and beverages because there are no interactions with the contents. The PVC-free metal closure ensures that nothing can migrate from the cap seal into the food staff so the contents stay fresh and authentic.

PROVALIN? was developed by Actega DS with the goal of replacing sealing materials for wide-neck closures which still often contain PVC with a PVC-free solution.

At the K 2013, which is scheduled from October 16 - 23, 2013, Actega DS shares booth E 16 in hall 6, with Eckart.
