MANHATTAN, Kansas -- Usually found in fish, omega-3 fatty acids are widely known to improve heart health and lower triglycerides, and may even help with rheumatoid arthritis and depression. A company has claimed that consumers can get fatty acids from their meat.
In conjunction with the Kansas University NBO3 Technologies, LLC dedicated 10 years of R&D to come up with omega-3 rich meat, and finally it announced the industry-changing products under the GreatO label—beef, chicken, pork and bacon, as well as Premium Dairy (milk, butter and cream). In the next few weeks, the company will introduce its GreatO meats, initially with its first to market the premium ground beef product in selected grocers, followed by an intensive, region-by-region rollout in 2013. The new product is the first and only USDA-labelled ground beef product naturally abundant in omega-3 fatty acids, and delivers a differentiated, natural health benefit to consumers through products consumed with great frequency.
"We are so confident in our proven process. GreatO is the only product on the shelf that prominently displays the omega-3 fatty acid levels on our USDA-approved label," says Todd Hansen, CEO. "For over a decade we have been working on revolutionising how to not only make products that are healthier for consumers, but in turn make the animals healthier. And yes, we are offering beef with naturally abundant omega-3 fatty acids by feeding animals an omega-3 rich diet. We are truly making every bite count for the animals and for humans, alike."
The cattle from which the beef comes from are fed with a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, enriching the meat with nutrients from oilseeds and natural whole grades high in protein and omega-3. The meat is also said to be tender and flavourful. The GreatO 80/20 premium ground beef will be sold in 1 lb. loaves or brick packages. Other beef product offerings include frozen patties, fresh patties, steaks and roasts.
