PROPRIETARY ingredients maker Frutarom Health BU Switzerland has confirmed its entry into the expanding omega-3 global market. The company produces deodorised DHA and EPA marine-sourced omega-3 ingredient for food and beverages as well as dietary supplements, and its access to these industries as a provider of flavours and savoury ingredients will help smooth the entry.
Studies have shown the benefits of omega-3 in improving cardiovascular health, brain and cognitive development, as well as eye health, but consumers are not getting adequate amounts in their diets due to the lack of intake of food with EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids. These nutrients have a good place in products for infant development and healthy aging.
“Thanks to Frutarom’s expertise, we can easily implement the new line into any food matrix, such as dairy, bakery, baby food, cereals, oils, confectionery, beverages, etc. It is both deodorised and without any negative impact on the taste,” said Holger Riemensperger, general manager of Frutarom Health.
In the past few years, the number of new food and drinks products containing omega 3 fatty acids has increased. A report by Innova Market Insights’ research said the number has swelled between 2007 and 2013. The share of omega 3-fortified products rose from 1.5% of total food and drinks launches tracked in 2011 to 1.6% in 2012, and rose again to 1.9% in 2013. Baby food was the number one category for omega 3 claims in 2013, accounting for 17.8% of tracked products.
