AT THE 20th meeting of the GCC Technical Committee on Food and Agricultural Products Specification, members discussed developments in food standards and specifications, which included a topic on the requirements for the slaughter of animals based on provisions of the Islamic Shariah; bottled water; chicken eggs and chilled chicken, according to a report in the Gulf Times.
The conference, which took place in Doha, Qatar on 2-3 June, was attended by representatives from the Standardisation and Metrology Department (SMD) at the Ministry of Environment. SMD director, Nawaf Ibrahim al-Hamad al-Mana stressed the importance of updating standards which he said is the basis for progress and competitiveness. So far efforts made by the GCC Standardisation Organisation have resulted in 12,000 technical regulations which include 1,100 for food specification, the report said.
