BOCHUM, Germany – Since spring of 2012, GEA Refrigeration Technologies has been an Alliance Member of the Blue Competence Initiative sponsored by the German Association for Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Systems (VDMA, in Frankfurt am Main).
Members of Blue Competence have committed themselves to create or to support sustainable solutions in harmony with economical, ecological, and social objectives. This entails extensive responsibility: for example, for prosperity, education, safety, and our natural environment. The many industrial-sector associations, organizations, and companies in this association also include addressing the consequences of urbanization and globalization in their concepts and activities.
Products of GEA Refrigeration Technologies, for example, contribute to aiding processes in the power sector to become more efficient. Its refrigeration technology keeps food and beverages fresh longer, enabling higher quality in what we eat and drink and prevents unnecessary waste by cooling products in warehouses that operate in accordance with good engineering practice and with conservation of resources. The energy efficiency and the sustainability of these solutions are evidenced not only by many practical examples, but also by numerous sector prizes such as the German Refrigeration Prize, which GEA Refrigeration Technologies received in 2011 for the ammonia chiller Grasso BluAstrum in the category “Climate-Friendly Application of Refrigeration Systems in Food and Beverage Production.”
GEA also received an award for the Energy Enhancer, a combination of an ammonia refrigeration unit and a heat pump. This development makes waste heat from refrigeration systems available for use in production processes. The Energy Enhancer likewise lowers the requirement for fossil fuels for heat production and, in turn, lowers production-related CO2 emissions in dairy processing, margarine production, and many other operations for foods and beverages. In addition, this system enhances cost effectiveness. On the basis of the great potential for CO2 savings, the Energy Enhancer from GEA Refrigeration Technologies received the Dutch Refrigeration Prize in February of this year.
“Offering solutions that combine climate and environment protection with great practical benefits and with cost effectiveness is the declared corporate goal of GEA Refrigeration Technologies,” said Dr Hugo Blaum, president of GEA Refrigeration Technologies. “We intend to substantiate this claim by joining the Blue Competence Initiative and by working in the VDMA in supporting technology for a better life.”
