The clinical nutrition market is expected to boom, with the infant nutrition segment forecast to experience the highest growth through 2020

THE global clinical nutrition market will continue expanding through 2020. The market may be classified into product type, infant nutrition type, and enteral nutrition type. By product type, it comprises infant nutrition, enteral nutrition, and parenteral nutrition. In terms of infant nutrition, the market covers milk-based, soy-based, organic, probiotic prebiotic, and others. The enteral nutrition sector consists of standard and enteral nutrition for chronic illnesses.

The infant nutrition segment was the largest overall in 2013 at US$21.1 billion, according to the new report from Research and Markets titled "Global Market Study on Clinical Nutrition: Infant Nutrition Segment To Witness Highest Growth by 2020". It is expected to grow at 3.8% CAGR from 2014 to 2020 to reach $27.1 billion at the end of the forecast period. The milk-based segment, which was the largest subcategory in 2013, rose by 4.2% CAGR between 2010 and 2013 to hit $8.1 billion in 2013.

The rising baby boomer population will also be the major factor driving the market’s growth. Demand for additional supplements will increase among aging individuals who fail to get proper nourishment due to loss of appetite and declining digestive system capability, both of which result in failure to get optimal amounts of nutrients.

The Asia-Pacific, the largest market for clinical nutrition in 2013 at $15.3 billion, expanded by 4.8% CAGR during the period 2010 to 2013 and accounted for 41.5% of the global market at the end of said period. It is forecast to expand at 3.9% CAGR from 2014 through 2020. Growth will be fueled by rising demand from India and China and the increasing geriatric population.

Europe, which represented 24.4% of the global market in 2013, will account for 25.4% of the market by 2020. The market share of North America will drop to 21.3% by 2020 from 22.6% in 2013.

The global clinical nutrition market is dominated by four players with a combined market share of 69%. Nestlé SA led the market in 2013.
