World production of crude steel increased by 3.6 percent in the first quarter of 2014, compared to the year before, to 404 million tons, according to The World Steel Association.
Data showed China remained the world’s largest crude steel producer with half of global output. China's production increased from 191.7 million tons in the first quarter of 2013 to 201 million tons this year.

The EU produced 43.8 million tons of crude steel in the same period, a 6.7 percent increase, and North America’s crude steel production was increased marginally to 29.9 million tons.

Turkey’s crude steel production for the January-March period was 8.4 million tons with a 0.4 percent decrease, but Turkey kept its position as the world’s eighth-largest crude steel producer.

World crude steel production increased 3.5 percent in 2013, compared to 2012, reaching 1,607 megatonnes. The growth came mainly from Asia and the Middle East; crude steel production in all other regions decreased in 2013 compared to 2012.
