Go green with sustainable designs

Source:Ringier Release Date:2011-06-20 110

Asia is showing very keen interest in developing and implementing green, clean and energy-efficient production technology. Like the hi-tech countries U.S., Switzerland and Germany, Asia is trying to develop and use sustainable technologies in their production operations.
Asheen Phansey, Product Manager for Sol idWorks Sustainability a t Dassault Systemes SolidWorks (DS SolidWorks) spoke to International Metalworking News for Asia (IMNA) on sustainability innovation.
"Everybody out there is now trying to "go green," said Asheen. "I believe every single user can take advantage of SolidWorks SustainabilityXpress."
SolidWorks SustainabilityXpress technology performs lifecycle-based sustainable design assessment directly on individual part designs to help users understand the impact of their design decisions. An initial analysis of your part design provides a baseline for direct comparison with any subsequent changes.
"We are starting to see real interest in the concept of designing for sustainability around the world. We've seen sales pretty much on every geographic location and in a wide variety of industries. It is really good to see that it doesn't concentrate on a specific company profile who buys this stuff."

 Sustainability in Asia
Asheen said Asia is viewing Sustainability not just a separate tool of SolidWorks but SolidWorks as a "green design tool."
"South Korea is an interesting example in Asia. I think it's a combination of government interest that they really want to do this. There is a lot of leading academic interest in sustainability there. It creates an environment where the companies realise that they will eventually have to get started and get ahead of the curve."
Global brands such as Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motors have undertaken a range of initiatives in an effort to align themselves with global trends on energy efficiency, climate change and resource utilisation and are likely influencing the Korean company universe to improve disclosure. Governmentlinked companies, such as POSCO and KEPCO also draw on high global standards, especially in environmental areas, which is important given the 2009 government commitment to a 2020 emissions reduction target.

 Environmental impact dashboard
SolidWorks Sustainability software measures four environmental indicators ove r the life cycle of your product: carbon footprint, total energy consumed, and air and water impacts. For each of these four environmental indicators, the dashboard provides a continuous, real-time assessment of current values, as well as comparisons to your baseline design. This comprehensive view makes it easy to grasp the environmental impacts of your design choices and incorporate sustainability, as a standard part of your design process.
SolidWorks Sustainability software integrates the tools users need for more sustainable part design directly into the SolidWorks design interface, and generates reports on their findings, so that they can quickly assess, build, and communicate greener designs.
"One of the big things that I focus on is training our resellers. I want to achieve a good internal alignment on sustainability from both technical perspective with demos for our technical support; and from sales perspective making sure that the sales force understands the business benefits and the critical issues that were being solved for those companies using the software."
Asheen creates content and teaches SolidWorks Sustainability to users on how to do sustainable design. "We have this interesting phenomenon betweenNike Zoom Vomero 13
