High-speed automatic turning with twin concept

Source:Ringier Release Date:2012-04-27 148

DMG / MORI SEIKI presents the new SRINT 50 with its patented TWIN work area concept and modular expansion options for six-sided complete machining with up to 3 turrets.
Firstly, the brand name SPRINT in the DMG / MORI SEIKI portfolio will continue to be synonymous with high-speed automatic turning of the highest technical level in future as well. But secondly, the only thing the new machine has in common with its predecessor series is its name. Because the SPRINT 50 that celebrated its world premiere at the METAV in Germany, has been radically redesigned, a fact that is reflected in an enormous increase in performance and flexibility. This has been achieved in particular thanks to the integrated TWIN concept and due to the (patented) cross traversable counter-spindle/tailstock combination respectively.
In addition, the new SPRINT generation has a consistently modular design. So an optimum machine configuration can be ordered for different requirement profiles. In other words, the version firstly shown at METAV with its two turrets and up to two Y-axes is just the start of the new SPRINT era.
"In future any user that assesses the technical characteristics and their benefits objectively will certainly decide on our SPRINT 50 wherever high-speed automatic turning is concerned." It reveals a lot about the high ambitions for the latest innovation from the GILDEMEISTER Turning Association, if a graduated engineer such as Dr. Ing. Jürgen Walz, Managing Director of the GILDEMEISTER Drehmaschinen GmbH, allows us to quote him using such bold words.

The prelude to a whole new series
Whereby, as an overall project strategy the SPRINT 50 simply constitutes the entry into a completely new model platform as Dr. Walz goes on to explain: "Up to now our turret machines for automatic turning are divided into different series with three tool holders in the case of the former SPRINT series or rather two turrets in the TWIN models. The new SPRINT generation will remove these boundaries and replace both predecessor series in the respective design sizes and will itself cover all requirements of automatic turning at an even higher level."
Its diversity derives from a modular high-tech building block concept which allows the new SPRINT series to be tailored individually to meet the needs and requirements of the customer. That is why the launch version of the SPRINT 50 with its two turrets and up to two Y-axes is shortly to be expanded to include a version with three turrets and three Y-axes respectively. A version with integrated B-axis should be ready to make its debut as early as September. And all preparations are already in the pipeline for a 65 version.
The field of action of the SPRINT 50 is therefore 6-sided complete machining of bar components up to 52mm in diameter and 600mm long with a speed of 7,000rpm on both the main and the counter spindle.
What you first notice concerning the concept is its space-saving design with a 37% smaller footprint. This compactness is achieved thanks to the vertical machine bed with its 3-point support that in addition ensures optimum chip flow, as well as offering the best framework conditions for both wet, oil and dry machining.

TWIN concept for maximum flexibility
Another element common to the different SPRINT 50 models is the cross traversable counter-spindle/tailstock combination, namely the (patented) TWIN concept which increases the application possibilities enormously, as reference to the machining options of the 2-turret machine demonstrates.
Utilisation option 1: Collision-free machining with two turrets and tailstock; 2 x 2-axis machining supported by the tailstocNIKE
