INDONESIA exported US$93.5 million worth of frozen peeled shrimp to the U.S. in January, making it the biggest exporter to the country according to the Indonesian embassy in Washington DC. The country accounts for 22.7% of the market in the US, followed by India in second place with an export value of US$91.4 million and a market share of 22.19%, noted a report in Asian Agribusiness.
Ecuador and Viet Nam rank third and fourth, respectively. The former had $51.1 million in export value and 12.41% market share, whilst Vietnam had $44.3 million and 10.7%. Thailand posted $34.2 million in exports for a market share of 8.3%, and Malaysia generated US$14.3 million, giving it a 3.49% share of the market.
Indonesian embassy trade attaché Ni Made Ayu Marthini said, “The potential of shrimp is promising. That’s why Indonesia has to increase production, prevent EMS disease, as well as ensure food safety and quality.”
