ITALY is the second-largest producer of tomatoes, with an annual output of 4.5 million tonnes. It is fitting that this year’s World Processing Tomato Congress will be held in Sirmione, on Garda Lake, from June 8-11. Some 500 professionals are expected at this assembly which is organised by AMITOM – Mediterranean International Association of the Processing Tomato and ISHS, and the International Society for Horticultural Science. Topics for discussion include global production and consumption forecasts, sustainability, and tomato growing productivity. The role of science in utilising limited resources is also on the agenda. Additionally, the Post Congress Tour, a programme of technical visits to a tomato farm, tomato processing factory and a research centre, is being organised in cooperation with Regione Emilia Romgna.
