Italy-made metrology systems penetrate Asian market

Since its beginnings in 1996, Italian company Itaca, has been an innovator in the measurement and statistical process control (SPC) industry. 

ITACA is proud to provide, since 20 years, metrology software, controllers, and measuring equipment for users who enjoy simple and straightforward usability.

Most recently, Itaca has partnered up with the world's largest vision metrology system company, Quality Vision International (QVI). The partnership has allowed Itaca to focus on innovation, while QVI focuses on distribution around the global.

Itaca’s Italian designed and made machines promise to be innovative as well as time-saving, cost-saving, space-saving and more efficient for manufacturers as they bring the measuring systems straight to the production floor. In MTA Singapore, IMNA managed to speak to Ing. Guglielmo RAHO who is the expert of machine design.

“Our machines have very high speed and accuracy for very little dimension and space occupation,” says RAHO. “Our measuring system is minimising the dimensions of moving parts and their distance from the work-piece and optical scales. So the measuring system does minimum movement to measure the part. This means that the accuracy is optimal because of the structure and geometry of the machine.”

Now because of this relatively new practice, some manufacturers have questioned whether or not bringing the measuring system into the production floor would make sense or if it would be as accurate as bringing the part to a quality room.

“This architecture is made to get the best accuracy in a very bad environment,” RAHO explains. “Some measuring systems are good in a quality room because the temperature is stable and everything is regulated. However if you go into the production floor, the temperature can steadily increase during a working day because all of the machines have been heating up the room. So this can also make the machines very hot. But there's nothing to worry about as the structure of our machines have been optimised to give the optimal accuracy in even the worst of environments with intrinsically stable components and architecture and advanced temperature compensation for the residual deviations.”

Some of Itaca’s best technologies cater to the customer who wants to have minimum distance between the part measurement and the machine-tool. Because of this, the workflow in the production floor changes for the better – with greater efficiency and returns for the company.

Says RAHO, “With our technology, the manufacturer will simply take the part, measure it, and if it's not to standard then you can modify and adjust the machine tool immediately. Our aim is not to have to go to all the way the quality room which might be quite far away and then wait for the diagnostics and then come all the way back to the production floor. It takes too much time. With our technology, you can save up to two hours of production because you can get the results immediately. It's really a good combination of cost, accuracy, and speed.”

The future of manufacturing is about flexible as well as faster production, and a part of that has to include having the inspection of the part near the machine tool. It will increase productivity for the machines as well as for the staff manning the equipment.

Says RAHO, “This is really the answer to the production manager’s needs”.
