Kyocera TCL Solar builds mega-solar power plants in Japan

Two floating plants in Hyogo Prefecture can power 920 households with its 3,300 megawatt hours (MWh) of power a year

KYOCERA TCL Solar LLC, a joint venture established by Kyocera Corporation and Century Tokyo Leasing Corporation, has recently completed the construction of two floating mega-solar power plants in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan.

The 1.7MW and 1.2MW installations, located at the Nishihira Pond and Higashihira Pond in Kato City and inaugurated in late March, will generate a total of approximately 3,300 megawatt hours (MWh) a year, enough electricity to power 920 households with an average annual use of 3,600kWh.

Because of the cooling effect of the water, floating solar power generating systems typically generate more electricity than ground-mount and rooftop types. They reduce reservoir water evaporation and algae growth by shading the water.

Floating platforms are also 100% recyclable. They use high-density polyethylene capable of withstanding ultraviolet rays and resisting corrosion. They are also designed and engineered to withstand extreme physical stress, including typhoon conditions.

By combining advanced engineered ceramics with metals and integrating them with other technologies, Kyocera Corporation (NYSE:KYO)(TOKYO:6971) has become a leading supplier of electronic components, printers, copiers, solar power generating systems, mobile phones, semiconductor packages, cutting tools and industrial ceramics.
