Large-capacity Haas turning centers for energy work

Energy exploration is big business, with big parts, and today’s shops need large-capacity machines to handle the big jobs commonly found in both the oil & gas and alternative energy industries.

The Haas ST-45 and ST-45L from Haas Automation, Inc., are heavy-duty, large-capacity turning centers – designed from the ground up to be extremely rigid, highly accurate, and very thermally stable. All castings are optimized using finite element analysis (FEA) to produce the most rigid designs, while improving chip and coolant flow, and simplifying maintenance and service.

The ST-45 provides a maximum cutting capacity of 25.5" x 44" (648 x 1118 mm), with maximum swings of 34.5" (876 mm) over the front apron and 25.5" (648mm) over the cross slide. The long-bed ST-45L offers the same 25.5" (648mm) cutting diameter and generous part swings, with a maximum turning length of 80" (2032mm) – nearly double that of the standard ST-45 – for turning and boring long shafts and tubing.

Both machines feature an A2-11 spindle nose with a 7.0" (178mm) bore, and provide a generous 6.5" (165mm) bar capacity with the optional 18" (457mm) chuck and hydraulic rotating union. The spindle turns to 1400 rpm, and is powered by a 40 hp (29.8Kw) vector dual-drive system that provides 1400 ft-lb (1898Nm) of torque. For heavy cutting operations, a 55 hp (41Kw) extra-performance spindle option is available that provides 2100 ft-lb (2847Nm) of torque. Both spindles feature on-the-fly wye-delta switching that yields a wide constant-horsepower band for constant surface feed cuts.

The ST-45 and ST-45L come equipped with a hydraulically clamped 12-station bolt-on style tool turret, with an option for a hybrid BOT/VDI turret. Other standard equipment includes rigid tapping, a 15" color LCD monitor, and built-in USB connectivity. Available high-productivity options include a belt-type chip conveyor, a servo-driven tailstock (standard on the ST-45L), an automatic tool probe, live tooling with C axis, high-pressure coolant systems and much more.

To tackle the types of jobs common in oilfield work, the ST-45 and ST-45L are available with Haas Automation’s proprietary Intuitive Programming System, which includes built-in threading and rethreading cycles for both straight and tapered threads – something found on no other machine.
