US Patent No. 8,388,938 B2, Cadbury Holdings Limited, Middlesex, UK, has patented a solid oral tooth whitening lozenge composition that is comprised of more than 75% by weight of solid material. The composition contains a water-soluble lozenge base, lozenge additives and a tooth-whitening agent comprising calcium pyrophosphate.
Periodontal Disease Treatment Containing Cocoa Bean Extract
Mars, Inc., McLean, VA, has patented a method of treating periodontal disease that entails administering a composition comprising a cocoa bean extract in an amount effective to reduce inflammation. The cocoa bean extract is prepared in this process:
Providing cocoa beans which are unfermented, and/or fermented for up to and including four days, wherein the cocoa beans are de-hulled cocoa beans;
Reducing de-hulled cocoa beans to powder including the step of defatting;
Extracting the powder obtained in step 2 with an aqueous solvent solution comprising an organic solvent and water, wherein the organic solvent is selected from the group consisting of acetone and alcohol; and Removing the solvent.
The cocoa bean extract comprises epicatechin, catechin, procyanidin dimer B2, procyanidin dimer B5, procyanidin trimer, procyanidin tetramer, procyanidin pentamer, procyanidin hexamer, procyanidin heptamer, procyanidin octamer, procyanidin nonamer and procyanidin decamer.
