Machining with robots

As part of its dissemination activities, the COMET project is hosting four technical seminars throughout Europe describing recent progress in its work on machining with robots.  Delcam, the project coordinator, organised and hosted the second of these meetings at CNC Robotics in Liverpool on 25th April.  It was a successful event with around 40 people attending, providing a great opportunity for the project partners to share their results with a wider audience; robot integrators, manufacturers and journalists were all present.

Following a welcome by Johnny van der Zwaag from Delcam, Jan Willem Gunnink, Project Coordinator and also from Delcam, gave an introduction to the COMET project and its background.  Project partners Gizelis Robotics, Nikon Metrology and SIR then presented their developments in machine cell integration, offline robot programming, offline and offline compensation to ensure accuracy, and the potential market and applications for robot machining.

After the formal presentations, a live robot machining demonstration was conducted by CNC Robotics, using one of the four COMET demonstration parts from partner TEKS.  This provided an opportunity for the attendees, which included representatives from robot manufacturers KUKA, Kawasaki and FANUC, to ask questions and have further discussions with the project partners about what the future might hold for machining with robots.

The feedback from participants was very positive, with "every presentation providing an excellent introduction” to the state of the art in robot machining.  The COMET project partners are now looking ahead to the 3rd technical seminar which is to be held in Germany at partner Fraunhofer IPA on 14th May.
