In the 1970s, three doctors served as initial incorporators for a soon to be built world-class hospital located in Makati City. That time, Makati was in its initial stages as the Philippines' premier residential, business, and commercial center. The vision was to establish a hospital to serve the said city's emerging communities. World-renowned obstetrics-gynecology specialist Dr. Constantino P. Manahan, distinguished surgeon Dr. Jose Y. Fores, and famous cardiologist Dr. Mariano M. Alimurung spearheaded the formation of Makati Medical Center or MakatiMed.
May 31, 1969 was the formal opening of MakatiMed. Now, it is recognized as one of the best-equipped hospitals in the country and in Asia. Credit this to the following mission of the founders' circle: "To have the best and latest in medical facilities and technology, to be manned by the most competent medical staff, and to be world-class so that Filipino medical graduates will not leave the country to pursue advanced training and specialization."
Cementing its status as a premium healthcare provider boasting personalized medical services, MakatiMed was honored with the "A Decade of Achievement" special award courtesy of Asian Hospital Management Awards (AHMA). It is also a pioneer in several endeavors that include the following: indigent charity program; first heart transplant in the country; successful surgical separation of conjoined twins; and the opening of the Dermatopathology Unit, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia.
At present, MakatiMed has 2,188 medical experts, staff members, and other personnel. It also makes good on the promise of Dr. Manahan made during MakatiMed's planning stages: "Health for all regardless of race, creed, or economic status." Illustrating this creed is MakatiMed's Health Service Program allowing less-privileged patients to free consultation at Outpatient Service Clinics and to 30% discount on diagnostic procedures.
Moreover, its green efforts involve the installation of air conditioning units with solar absorption features, retirement of old chillers, switching of fluorescent tubes to eco-friendly T5 tubes, and installation of new 1.5 MVA transformers that save energy.

Equipment and Facilities
State-of-the-art and sophisticated facilities and medical equipment also exhibit why MakatiMed is top caliber. Its latest building, Tower 2, has 14 theaters fully equipped with digital intelligent equipment and specialty centers called Centers of Excellence: Aesthetic Center, Cancer Center, Executive Health Center, Optimal Aging Center, Urogynecology and Incontinence Center, Center for Osteoporosis and Bone Health, Liver Care Center, Weight Wellness Center, Center of Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine and Dance, and Spine Clinic.
The Breast Clinic boasts the Automated Breast Volume Scanner (ABVS) that offers advanced 3D features for comprehensive ultrasound.
The hospital's Center for Osteoporosis and Bone Health has top diagnostic technology for osteoporosis. This includes the first GE Lunar iDXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) machines in Southeast Asia. The said equipment is the most advanced bone densitometer to date.
Lowering the possibility of repeat examinations and showing optimum image quality, the Symbia S dual-head gamma camera system equips the Nuclear Medicine department.
Another first in Southeast Asia and in the country, a comprehensive Laboratory Automation System was installed in the Pathology and Laboratories for accurate results.
Mobile doctors with Internet access can now view reports and patients' images anywhere via email courtesy of MakatiMed's Radiology Information System (RIS) and Picture Archiving and CommunicatioAir Max 1 Master
