BUILDING on the successful first year of its local contract-farming project, Makro Egypt recently signed on another 36 local farmers to the Makro Farmers Project. The farmers will provide fresh produce to Makro's distribution platform in Qualoubayia, where the fruits and vegetables will be packed for distribution to institutional customers.
The farmers will also be given three years of technical support in irrigation and fertilisation techniques. "Egypt's agricultural sector is a key industry and it is crucial to ensure that it is evolving to meet the growing food supply needs of the country," said Makro Egypt managing director Francois Oliver. "By signing supply agreements with these farmers directly, we have shortened the supply chain from farm to consumer, thereby creating a win-win situation: local farmers can enjoy greater profit margins, while end consumers are ensured superior quality fresh produce."
Makro Egypt first launched the Farmers Project in early 2010. The Dut ch Embassy and the International Modernisation Centre (IMC) also financially support the project, whilst the Egyptian Centre for Agro-Industrial Exports (E-Trace) provided training for the farmers.
