Master of Wine student applications open for 2012/13

LONDON -- The Institute of Masters of Wine is now accepting applications for its 2012/13 Study Programme. Wine trade professionals who aspire to the world’s most prestigious wine trade qualification can apply to the Institute via the website at www.mastersofwine.org.
The application process includes a practical tasting element as well as a demonstration of a grasp of theory by means of an essay. Applicants are also required to show their relevant experience by sharing their personal, educational and employment history, and supply a reference either from a Master of Wine or a senior member of the wine industry.
Recalling her quest to become a Master of Wine, the Institute chair Lynne Sherriff MW, said, “This is a tremendously exciting time for these applicants, who are starting off on a journey that will be tough, rewarding, and ultimately life-changing. I clearly remember the start of my own personal quest to become a Master of Wine, and the joy and fulfillment of finally achieving that goal. Those who succeed will be welcomed into the global family represented by the Institute, and I know that all Masters of Wine will join me in giving encouragement and wishing good luck to all our applicants.”
Siobhan Turner, executive director of the Institute adds, “The Institute’s Study Programme is universally recognised to be challenging yet extremely enjoyable, and we are expecting strong applications from around the world. There is an enormous amount of talent in the global wine industry, and we are very keen to recruit the best of that talent.
A record number of students worldwide took the Institute of Masters of Wine’s exams in June, and 98 candidates, from 21 different countries, put themselves forward, including students from China and India, who are competing to become the first Masters of Wine in their respective countries.

“The Institute’s diverse membership is a great asset, and we look forward in coming years to welcoming Masters of Wine from entirely new territories, whilst consolidating the thriving communities that exist in some of our more established regions,” Ms Turner said.
The Institute of Masters of Wine has exam centres in London (UK), Napa (California), and Sydney (Australia). In recent years the total student body has grown to 298, from 29 different countries.
