Maximum performance cutter for steel

The new Walter Prototyp Proto.max?ST aims at maximum metal removal during roughing, as well as finishing. The addition of ST to the name stands for the application area - steel (ISO-P), including stainless steel (ISO-M). The tool is primarily intended for users from general mechanical engineering, tool and mould construction and the automotive industry. The variety of features of the solid carbide end mill, available in a diameter range of 2 to 20mm, make it a maximum performance cutter: an important component is the new TAZ coating, that significantly contributes to the increase in output of up to 50%. The special feature of this tool is a finish coating made of zirconium nitrate. This gives the tools an extremely smooth, low-friction surface. The chemical property it contains also prevents the formation of built up edges.
The Walter Prototyp Proto.max?ST is available as a three- and four-flute end mill. The user chooses the appropriate version depending on the material and the operation. The three-flute version is capable of milling out to a depth of up to 2xD, the four-flute version up to 1.5xD. As more reach is often required when pocket milling or plunge milling at an angle, the end mills have a reduced neck and back cutting, which prevents the formation of so-called waterlines. Process reliability is of the utmost importance when the level of metal removal is very high. The new high-performance end mills therefore have a particularly stable core and a shank with special surface treatment for increased grip. A stable microgeometry prevents cutting edge wear. An uneven pitch provides smooth running, while a helix angle of 45o° with the three-flute cutter and 50o° with the four-flute cutter provide a smooth cut and good chip transport. All of the features contribute towards a significant reduction in cutting forces and therefore spindle stress. In order to cover a wide range of applications, the product spectrum includes versions with and without corner radius (R= 0.2 up to 4 mm).
