Yamazaki Mazak Corp. released its newest compact CNC lathe mode, “QUICK TURN PRIMOS” last year in response to growing demand in Asia. Mr Thomas Lee, Deputy General Manager of Sales Division in Yamazaki Mazak Singapore Pte Ltd (YMS) further explained to International Metalworking News for Asia (IMNA) the latest CNC lathe and its operations in the South East Asian region.

The latest model is being mass produced in Yamazaki Mazak Singapore’s factory, which has undergone a large scale plant expansion to increase production capability and the facility now holds a new technology centre.

Despite South East Asia as their main target market, sales and promotional activities are done in collaboration to achieve synergy, hence the need to work together closely among the other Yamazaki Mazak regional offces.

On developing Quick Turn Primos (QTP)

Yamazaki Mazak Singapore (YMS) adopted a global approach when new products are being developed, whereby the company possesses a global mind set where the products would be suitable for all markets.

YMS made a strategic move knowing full well that it would be difficult to compete with countries where machines can be produced at a lower cost, thus by finding the needs of their long term customers, QTP not only encompasses the feedbacks of their customers, but as well as their needs. Thomas believes in the importance of productivity, effciency and quality of a machine, a machine that would be capable of serving YMS customer’s need in the long term.

Thomas has confdence in the demand for QTP due to its compact size and capability to maximise productivity per square meter. QTP is the result of extensive market research and the constructive feedback provided by customers. YMS greatest gift back to their customers would be the introduction of the QTP which is capable of satisfying customer’s needs and the potential to improve productivity.

QTP is available in three different sizes, each catered to a different target market in the South East Asian region.

Why Singapore was chosen

Top management of Yamazaki Mazak decided Singapore was the ideal country after comparing several critical factors such as economic stability and the availability of skilled labour.

Thomas admitted that it has been a huge challenge for YMS to purchase materials that are required for their machines, nonetheless he felt that the branding of the machine should be synonymous with the brand of Singapore, which is effciency.

Selling of machines is only the tip of the iceberg for YMS, the company also provide after sales services and support throughout the product life cycle as long as the parts are available.

The unparalleled commitment to quality and support is Yamazaki Mazak Singapore’s effort to continue to serve and satisfy customers is one of the many value added attributes that comes together with the product.

Doing business in Asia

Thomas described Asia as a huge and challenging market with a diversified culture, he stressed on the importance of establishing local support to their customers as it reduces their perceived risks. Thomasodziez
