Mazda Motor Corp. has created an innovative approach in recycling plastic automobile bumpers, launching the world's first technology to recycle bumpers from different car producers, along with the support and automation of the processes like eliminating metal contaminants. The technology will remove the necessity for different collection systems of bumpers from different carmakers, and enhance labour-intensive operations like removing metals. The technology integrates all the recycling stages included in crushing used bumpers to reproduce raw materials, into a single automated process. The company said these innovations are significant steps for the industry. Earlier, it claimed polypropylene bumpers from various manufacturers had to be recycled separately because of differences in the composition of the polypropylene and the paint adhesion. The technology, which the company will be using, is similar to a kneading machine employed in food or chemical processing, which applies a powerful shear to the recycled plastic, stripping off paint effectively. Mazda said the process could also remove metal attachments, a taxing process that demands hand-sorting and visual inspection, by using jets of pressurised air. www.mazda.com
