MediaTek produced 100 million chipsets in 2012

Sharp accepts MediaTek’s chipset and now SONY follows suit. SONY requests MediaTek to send their MT6589 chipset for advanced inspection and as this platform incorporates many computing advantages, has accepted the product.  This signifies that this Japan-Taiwan cooperation is moving on to the next level.  This will help combat the biggest threat from South Korea’s SAMSUNG.  This also indicates that Qualcomm’s leading role in the market is no longer unchallengeable.

Among all the cell phone manufacturers, only SAMSUNG and Apple develop their own chipsets. Moreover, it used to be that only these two manufacturers reach one hundred million in sales to dealers while others find it hard to reach even half of that number.

Therefore, when MediaTek claimed that they had a hundred and ten million sales to dealers, global cell phone producers took notice. Now SONY and HTC are in talks with MediaTek for further cooperation. MediaTek has built many factories around China and Taiwan so that they can have certain influence. In the Mainland, they have successfully assisted some local cell phone producers to expand to the global market. Because of their past high-profile activities, MediaTek’s next moves will be eagerly monitored by the industry.
