Modern cleaning techniques for plastic tools and components

Plastics & Rubber

Whether tools and moulds or manufactured componentscleaning procedures in the plastics processing industry are becoming more demanding and complex. Modern cleaning technologies assure efficient, safe, quick and environmentally harmless removal of plastic and manufacturing residues as well as other contamination.

In the plastics industry cleaning means in the first place removal of plastic residues adhering to tools and moulds, before they impair the quality of the product. When changing the product or the colour, cleaning is also an essential task.

Ultrasonic injection moulding and extrusion tools

For tools being used in injection moulding machines and in extruders, cleaning processes are necessary at more or less short intervals, whereby removal of dust, clearing of gas residues and mould coatings, elimination of fretting corrosion, removal of corrosion and lime coatings as well as lubricant residues as far as cleaning around the ventilation holes become necessary.A cleaning cycle such as this in classical handwork cleaning can take from a few hours up to several man-days with complex 96-fold tools. Since the tools are often unique specimens, production is idle during this time. A solution for minimising cleaning time and optimising cleaning quality is provided by ultrasonic cleaning. This functions by chemical and physical process technologies which are adjusted exactly to the cleaning task. The tools are immersed in a bath of cleaning fluid which is equipped with ultrasonic transducers. The cleaning effect of ultrasonic waves is based on cavitation, an alternating action of pressure and suction: In the suction phase tiny bubbles are generated which implode in the pressure phase. Thus strong currents and turbulence are created which virtually blast off the contamination from the tool. Material residues and coatings, oxides, oils and other materials are removed, carefully but effectively from the surface and from recesses such as cooling and ventilation holes. In addition to the actual cleaning bath an ultrasound unit with rinse and conservation bath can be installed.

Furthermore they provide effective drying modules.
