More plastics parks to be set up in India

Six industrial parks intended for plastics production will be set up in India under the 12th Five-Year Plan. The locations of these plastics parks are Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, UP, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, according to Joint Secretary (Petrochemicals), Neelkamal Darbari. Construction and development of 4 plastic parks in MP, Tamil Nadu, Odisha and Assam are ongoing and these parks will be ready in next one or 2 years. The 6 proposed parks will be in addition to these 4 new parks. The plastic park scheme aims to set up clusters of those engaged in the plastic industry. The parks are targeted to have plastic reprocessing and recycling plant and waste management system. India has seen growing consumption of plastics, including PE, PP, PVC in the country is pegged at 9 million tonnes per annum, out of which 2 million tonnes is imported from other countries including Taiwan and China. The per capita consumption of plastics in India is only about 7-8 kgs. compared to about 95 kgs. in United States and 65 kg in Europe.
