With assistance from India, Mozambique government officials hope to revive the country’s nearly abandoned tea industry. A delegation met with India tea experts in Kolkata to seek assistance in re-launching old plantations though investment and technology.
Present at the meeting were Mozambican ambassador in the country, José Maria Morais and head of India’s Tea Board, M.G.V.K. Bhanu, and a host of businessmen and entrepreneurs. According to Mr Morais, Mozambique has 39,000 hectares of tea plantations, with only 2,4000 operated by private companies. Many of these plantations were abandoned during a civil war that lasted 16 years. Currently only five plantations are in operation, and these are found in the Gurué district of Zambezia province.
