Looking at Singapore, Mr. Fischer says that the traditional customers in semi-con and consumer electronics have moved to Malaysia. Still, the Singapore office is able to provide coverage. Malaysia has a good cost base and is well positioned to produce consumer electronics.
For Singapore, it is suitable for higher end components with lower volume and higher quality. Therefore, skilled labor is very important as there need to be a continuity of skills and knowledge. With these, there will be no lack of investment.
Mr. Fischer thinks that various segment in the industry will continue to grow. However the benchmark may not be the number of machines sold but the push for technology. For example in the Singapore exhibition, there are more advanced machine tools on display compared to other shows in the region.
