New binder for solvent-free, 2-component coatings

Source:Bayer Materialscience Release Date:2013-03-08 315
Plastics & Rubber
The product is suitable for both clearcoats and pigmented coatings, for primers as well as for topcoats. In a one-component formulation, the dispersion's self-crosslinking mechanism ensures that the resulting wood coating exhibits good resistance.

Binders for use in both one- and two-component waterborne wood coatings are an economical solution when coating manufacturers purchase both in huge quantities. This flexibility had previously come at the price of compromises with respect to chemical resistance, however. Bayhydrol? A 2846 XP, the new solvent-free polyacrylate dispersion that Bayer MaterialScience is presenting at the 2013 European Coatings Show, fulfills both requirements equally.

The product is suitable for both clearcoats and pigmented coatings, for primers as well as for topcoats. In a one-component formulation, the dispersion's self-crosslinking mechanism ensures that the resulting wood coating exhibits good resistance to such things as red wine, coffee, mustard, water, acetone and cleansers. The addition of Bayhydur? XP 2655 or other anionically hydrophilized polyisocyanate hardeners further raises the chemical resistance to the level of modern solvent-free two-component coatings.

Furniture manufacturers and other end customers can also benefit from the flexible usage possibilities afforded by the new polyacrylate dispersion by using a one-component formulation as the mill base and only adding a hardener as needed. End customers will also appreciate the hand-miscibility, the long pot life and the rapid curing of coatings afforded by Bayhydrol? A 2846 XP.
