Contipro Biotech will present a new peptide mitigating the visible signs of skin aging at this month's in-cosmetics Asia.
According to the company, the Cellcon peptide stimulates the production of proteins responsible for intercellular communication in the skin, enhances the metabolic activity of epidermal cells, and improves the skin barrier function and the hydration of the skin. The key factor is the effect that it has on desmosomes, which are specialized cell junctions playing a pivotal role in the attachment of cells to each other. In aged skin, desmosomes are down-regulated or prematurely degraded. Lack of cohesion results in dehydrated scaly skin prone to infections.
Applying this hexapeptide to the skin sends cells a signal to produce higher quantities of desmoglein-1. As the sequence of peptide contained in Cellcon is derived from desmoglein-1, the higher amount of this sequence in a cell simulates desmosome degradation. Based on the negative feedback process, a higher level of fragments stimulates the cell to synthesize new protein molecules of desmoglein-1. This protein can be then incorporated into desmosomes, or used for the formation of new desmosomes in tissue.
