Next-generation radiation shielding glass

Source:ringier Release Date:2012-11-21 368

MULTI-LAYERED glass from Nippon Electric Glass Company provides both excellent shielding capability and high light transmission. The lead glass panels, LX Premium, are manufactured by laminating an LX-57B radiation shielding lead glass panel with special cover glass panels. This next-generation radiation-shielding glass reduces medical staff’s radiation exposure at radiation diagnosis facilities.

Compared to other transparent shielding materials, LX-57B features high shielding capability despite its thinness because of its high lead content. For example, the shielding capability of a 9-mm thick LX-57B panel is equivalent to that of a 2-mm thick lead panel (lead equivalent: 2.0 mmPb). This quality makes the panel suitable for applications such as:

? Windows for control rooms of X-ray rooms or hybrid operation rooms that require sterilisation and disinfection

? Access windows that are highly likely to be exposed to splashes of chemicals, e.g. for angiography rooms

? Windows for frequently used doors, such as X-ray rooms.

At the same time, the light transmittance is almost the same as that of ordinary window glass panels, which makes LX-57B suited for monitoring and access windows. The multi-layer glass surface is not subject to discolouring from splashes of chemicals and has excellent impact safety. It is also resistant to clouding when wiped with wet cloth or cleaning agents.
