IN TODAY’S fast-changing digital age, how should packaging design embrace such idea as Internet of Things (IoT)? Zhao Zuoliang, art director of SHAW&SHAW, a well-known design house in China, share his insights with Happi Asia.
“For packaging design, systematic strategy plays an essential role as there are so many aspects are now involved, ranging from product itself, materials and technologies to cultural elements,” Mr. Zhao noted. “Packaging design itself cannot be separated from branding and marketing strategies of a product. Design only can be complete when a product is bought and used by consumers.”
IoT has to be factored into today’s packaging design when it comes to systematic strategy, he emphasized. “We have to keep a close eye on Internet of Thing, as today’s youth has become a generation of phubbing, devoting large portion of their time to mobile shopping and communication,” Mr. Zhao explained. “As such, we as designers have to research into this new area as Internet has already become an integral part of marketing strategy.”
In addition, logistic elements such as shipping, storage and distribution also have to be taken into account, he added.
