THE recent results of the Europe-wide investigation of adherence to the defined migration limits in glass jars with oily contents bring to the fore the need for stricter penalties and viable solutions going forward.
The investigation revealed only a small fraction of the products investigated conformed to the rules. The majority, mostly closure manufacturers, fillers, food manufacturers, and retailers, exceeded the limits of relevant requirements of Regulation (EU) 10/2011 and the recent amendments to Regulation 882/2004. The results further show that ESBO, PAD, ATBC, DBS, DINCH, ARMG and acPG had migrated out of the lid seal into the contents. Considerable flaws and omissions and even incorrect entries were also noted on the mandatory documentation on the plasticizers used and their composition.
This noncompliance by a majority of those responsible for food safety is prompting a call for stringent fines. It also stresses the importance of incentives to encourage companies to improve safety.
The results of the investigation likewise reinforce the need for products, technologies, or solutions such as the Provalin from Actega DS.
This innovative sealant is free of PVC, phthalates, and other plasticizers. The Provalin family is suitable for all types of contents, filling processes, and closure processes.
The sealant offers maximum, tested food safety and complies with EU regulations. Several closure and food manufacturers, and fillers have been using the product since 2011.
