The use of stevia leaf sweetener in food and beverage products is on the rise, according to stevia producer and innovator, PureCircle. Citing Mintel research, the company said launches of food and beverage with stevia as sweetener increased steadily since 2012, reaching 16%. In 2017, product launches with stevia grew +10% compared to the previous year.
The categories in which stevia is mostly used are snacks, juice drinks, dairy, carbonated soft drinks and confectionery.
By region, Asia Pacific accounted for 40% of food and beverage product launches. Europe at 22% is at second, then followed by Latin America, North America and Middle East/Africa.
The major companies that introduced products with stevia leaf sweetener were Calbee Foods, The Coca-Cola Co, Groupe Danone, Grupo Bimbo, Kraft Heinz, Nestle, PepsiCo, Seven & i Holdings; and Unilever.
