OCTAL was declared the winner of the Green Footprint Award at the Oman Green Awards 2012 held recently in Muscat. Oman Green Awards is the Sultanate’s first Environmental Awards that honor outstanding environmental vision, endeavors and achievements of corporates and individuals. OCTAL won the Green Footprint Award category for its efforts in initiating measures to effectively reduce its carbon footprint.
“OCTAL is committed to minimizing the environmental impact of its day-to-day operations by integrating environmental management as a standard business practice across the organization. We have invested more than US$600 million in this area for the deployment of ground-breaking technology and propriety production methods to produce PET resin and PET sheet with the lowest carbon footprint in the world. We believe in continuous improvement and transparency and therefore have engaged third party sustainability experts to analyze, track and disclose our environmental performance,” expressed Nicholas Barakat, CEO of OCTAL.
Specifically, OCTAL has set forth new global benchmarks for both product and environmental excellence. The company currently uses 67% less electricity to manufacture DPET sheet and 38% less energy for PET resin. Impact on local water resources is also minimized by the company’s innovative process with 100% of the water used derived from treated urban waste water. All of OCTAL’s energy needs are met via on-site high efficiency burners that utilize clean natural gas. These burners consume up to 20% less gas than traditional PET plants. The integrated OCTAL facility has the ability to recycle trim waste during the manufacturing process and offers its customers recycling of the skeletal waste generated during the thermoforming process. As a result, the company’s PET sheet, DPET, boasts a 25% lower carbon footprint than conventional APET as confirmed by third party experts. Apart from its technology OCTAL has also initiated measures within the facility that contribute to its energy, water and waste reduction and environmental responsibility goals.
