On September 19th, 2023, the 23rd China International Industry Fair (CIIF) is held in Shanghai. As an important window and platform to promote international trades for China, 9 shows are established under CIIF 2023: Metalworking and CNC Machine Tool Show, Industrial Automation Show, Energy-Saving & Industrial Accessory Show, Information & Communication Technology Show, Energy Show, New Energy Auto Show, Robotics Show, Scientific & Technological Innovation Show, New Material Industry Show, attracting over 180,000 visitors.
Italy is a significant economic partner of China and one of the main participating countries in CIIF 2023. The Italian Trade Agency (ITA) and the China-Italy Chamber of Commerce (CICC), together with more than 60 companies and associations participating in this important industrial event. Not only the number of Italian exhibitors exceeded previous edition of the fair in 2020, but the Italian Pavilion is the largest international pavilion at CIIF, covering 1,300 square meters.
The opening ceremony of Italian Pavilion was held at 11 am. Consul General of Italy in Shanghai Tiziana D'Angelo, Vice Director of Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization (SHEITC) Rong Zhiqin, Trade Commissioner of the Italian Trade Agency in Shanghai Augusto Di Giacinto, Chairman of the China-Italy Chamber of Commerce (CICC) Paolo Bazzoni attended the ribbon cutting ceremony and warmly welcomed the visitors.
Consul General of Italy in Shanghai Tiziana D'Angelo applauded fruitful economic and trade cooperation between China and Italy commented that “The Italian companies present at this important event represent the diversity and excellence of the Italian industrial sector. They showcase the role Italy can play in building a sustainable industrial future for the new generations, and the potential for mutually beneficial exchanges between Italy and China.”
As an essential and influential role in all sectors and industries of mechanical manufacturing and applications, such as packaging machinery, textile machinery, thermal energy, electrical, electronic, transmission equipment, automotive technology, new energy, environmental protection technology, and architectural design, Italy enjoys a high reputation and respect worldwide.
As one of the most automated countries in the world, Italy is well respected internationally for its quality production of machinery, components, and robots. Machinery is Italy’s top export industry worldwide, accounting for a sizeable 18% of international trade and making it the fifth largest machinery exporter in the world. There are 5,000 Italian companies specialized in cutting-edge technology for the creation of mechanical instruments and machinery components, generating 80 billion euros world-wide.
Italy holds many records in mechanical, industrial and environmental: Italy is the European country with the highest recycling rate of the total volume of special and urban waste produced. Thanks to the use of secondary raw materials as a substitute of raw material, 23 million tons of oil equivalent and 63 million tons of CO2 equivalent are avoided in Italy every year. Meanwhile, over the past five years, more than one-third of non-agricultural Italian companies have made environmental investments, resulting in faster growth, increased exports, and more job opportunities.
Over 60 cutting-edge companies and associations attended this grand exhibition participating in the Italian Pavilion. The Pavilion is decorated with geometric shapes and squares, which not only revokes the shape of stars, or flowers and Italian piazza, but also conveys the idea of energy and sustainability. It focuses on the concept of industrial green and low-carbon transformation, showcasing green manufacturing technologies and solutions in collaboration with exhibitors.
Over past years, China and Italy have maintained extensive bilateral economic and trade relations. Despite the impact of global economic challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic, bilateral cooperation between China and Italy has steadily continued to thrive. In 2022, Italian export of Mechanical and related equipment (HS codes from 84 to 90) represented 40,93% of total Italian export to China, with a value of 6.727.494.851 Euros out of total Italian export value of 16.441.494.838 Euro.)
Trade Commissioner of the Italian Trade Agency in Shanghai Augusto Di Giacinto highlighted “This was a very ambitious project and effort involving the Italian institutions, the Italian chamber of commerce, the Italian associations like UCIMU and some of the best Italian companies in China. In Italian we say, “fare sistema” a very simple concept: working together like the fingers of a hand to show the best of Italy to our Chinese friends and business counterparts. This is finally the year of restarting with the coming back of Italian companies on the Chinese market in presence at the most important fairs in China. not only the Italian companies are coming back to China, but we are also very much involved in the important activity of organizing and sending to Italy many delegations of Chinese businessmen to the main Italian exhibitions and events.”
As a governmental agency that supports the business development of Italian companies abroad, ITA has a history of over 50 years in China and 3 offices in mainland. Through close collaboration with Chinese local governments and businesses, ITA dedicates to increase cooperation chances between China and Italy, facilitate Italian business in China, create more positive image of Italy and strengthen the influence of Italian machinery manufacturing industry in China.
Since 2023 Spring, ITA has actively participated in various international exhibitions in China such as the 32nd China Glass Exhibition 2023, the China Beauty Expo 2023, The 25th Bakery China 2023, the 88th China International Medical Equipment Fair (CMEF China 2023), the 29th International Processing & Packaging Exhibition (ProPak China 2023). Italian companies in fields like medicine innovation and packaging machinery showcased high-tech and innovative equipment, demonstrating Italy's power of innovation technology.
Chairman of the China-Italy Chamber of Commerce (CICC) Paolo Bazzoni remains the glue that brings them together, supports them and helps them grow. He emphasized that “CICC, together with ITA/ICE, and the support of the Consulate General in Shanghai, are aggregating over 60 leading Italian companies at the CIIF exhibition in Shanghai. Despite the present slowdowns of the domestic demand, our companies continue to pursue their strategy adopting new measures, demonstrating the proactivity and unity of our Italian businesses in China.”
The first day exhibition gathered many Chinese operators interested in Italian technologies.
