PERSTOP has recently launched a new line of CapaTM Lactide copolyols ideal for high-performance polyurethanes with reduced carbon footprints.
The three diols and one triol that the company launched at the Utech Europe 2015 international polyurethanes exhibition and conference, which was held in Maastricht, the Netherlands last April 14 to 16, are suitable for a wide range of polyurethane elastomers, adhesives, and coatings. The products, which are liquids at room temperature, boast enhanced solubility that will enable formulators to decrease, if not totally eliminate, the use of solvents.
The new Capa Lactide liquid polyols in the 8000 Series are produced by copolymerizing Perstorp’s well-known Capa caprolactone with renewable lactide monomers. They have up to 50% renewable content depending on grade and feature the same high level of quality and consistency offered by Capa caprolactone polyols.
According to Joel Neale, project manager Innovation, “They are made using a new polymer chemistry unique to Perstorp, and they have been specifically developed to enable formulators to fine-tune performance properties.”
Designed for enhanced performance in adhesives of various types, the Capa Lactides boost adhesion to demanding substrates. Besides providing extra open-time, they increase hardness without raising the isocyanate content of the final formulation. Their renewable content also offers formulators a greater level of sustainability.
Ideal for thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) adhesives, the new copolyols feature high resistance to wear, abrasion, oils, and chemicals. They feature optical clarity and minimal haze to retain consistency in the appearance of adhesive joints and cast elastomers.
The Capa Lactides are also suitable for soft-feel coatings, which have high UV resistance and are ideal for consumer electronics and applications such as automotive interiors. In addition to medium molecular weight and low crystallinity, the copolyols are transparent, which contribute to the optical qualities of coatings. Their low viscosity facilitates processing. They ensure high quality and consistency unmatched by other renewable alternatives.
