THE GCC’s plastic industry is undergoing changes, in particular a diversification of its product portfolio in many areas including food packaging. By next year, it is expected that the region will produce 23 plastic products, or double the current number.
The use of plastic for packaging will continue to grow. In the food industry, customers demand for plastics that can of course enhance shelf life and protection of food. Furthermore, in most cases, customers also want innovations that will help them meet their sustainability and efficiency goals. This demand puts emphasis on recycling initiatives. Altogether, the plastic packaging industry is expected to intensify research and development of better products, find more applications for recyclable plastics, as well as ensure recycling efforts are made more effective.

A venue to learn about developments in the region’s packaging industry is the PlastiPack Middle East Conference scheduled from 23–25 May 2016 at the Dusit Thani Hotel, Dubai, UAE. It has a prestigious line up of speakers among them are senior leaders from Nestlé, Mars Middle East, Huhtamaki Group, Agthia, the Saudi Food & Drug Authority, Almarai, and Unilever West Africa.
The agenda will focus on better efficiency as well as innovation in packaging applications. It will provide an interactive forum for industry stakeholders from across the entire value chain including petrochemical manufacturers, plastic processors and converters, FMCG and F&B brand owners, big pharma, R&D institutions and solution providers, to discuss the latest price increases, lean manufacturing and how to drive exports.
