Metalworking
Dr. Mohammed Naeem, Senior Manager, Business Development for Prima Power Laserdyne, will make a major presentation at the China Aerospace Propulsion Technology Summit (CAPTS) in Chengdu, China, May 28 -29.

Dr. Naeem’s presentation title is “Flexible 3D Laser Systems For Aerospace Applications.” Dr.Naeem will present Laserdyne’s recent successes in applying its multi-axis laser system technology to challenging aerospace applications. These include drilling, cutting and welding. Of particular interest are several new aerospace applications including laser welding of compressor stator cascades and cover plates to the cast cores of high pressure and low pressure blades.   The presentation will also highlight applications for welding in airframe assembly.

Compared to traditional welding methods, laser welding using a LASERDYNE BeamDirector system fitted with high power QCW fiber laser has shown superior performance including high welding speeds, reduced heat input, reduced distortion, operational flexibility, and the ability to weld dissimilar materials effectively.  The same system used for welding also has application to cutting and drilling making it attractive for low volume manufacturing that is characteristic of aerospace manufacturing.

CAPTS 2014 is the third annual conference at which global aviation experts from aero engine companies and their key suppliers along with research institutes will present the latest developments in the design, manufacture and testing of aero engines.

Dr. Naeem is a frequently requested presenter at major technical conferences worldwide including recent ones in the U.S., Germany and Japan. Prior to joining Laserdyne, Dr. Naeem was global accounts manager and a laser process development engineer with GSI/Lumonics, Rugby, UK for 24 years. He holds a PhD from Loughborough University of Technology, Leicestershire, UK specializing in metallurgy and materials science. He has written technical papers for over 100 publications most recently as a contributing author for the “Handbook of Laser Welding Technologies”.
