Printer models tout simple usability

The latest DataFlex models offer longer production runs, lower coding errors

VIDEOJET Technologies Inc. has added two thermal transfer overprinters (TTO) to its DataFlex? product line. Models 6320 and 6420 are designed to meet a range of flexible packaging and labelling applications in the snack foods, bakery, meat & poultry, and confectionery markets.

Available in 32-mm and 53-mm print width formats, the DataFlex 6320 fits moderate speed applications including vertical form, fill, and seal, whilst the DataFlex 6420 is designed for higher throughput, to provide more capability for faster marking applications. It has 53-mm and 107-mm print width formats ideal for ultrafast horizontal form, fill, seal, and wide format coding applications requiring a significant amount of content. Enhanced features on these models improve uptime and productivity. They include a standard high-capacity ribbon roll and ribbon saving features that deliver industry-leading line throughput between ribbon changeovers.

Videojet’s new TTO products are simple to operate and include its Code Assurance as standard. According to the company, this code offers advanced features to eliminate product waste and re-work caused by coding errors.

Productivity advantage

Both printer models support the patented, clutchless ribbon drive, available on the DataFlex product line. Installed on thousands of operational printers, the patented drive is entirely software controlled, and does not require additional mechanical devices such as dancer arms, encoders or load cells to control ribbon movement and tension. So whether the application demands small codes at high print speeds or large format codes containing a lot of data, unscheduled ribbon-related downtime due to ribbon wrinkling or ribbon breakages is not likely to occur.

The printers have as standard a high capacity 1,200-metre ribbon length, which provides up to 9,000 more prints compared to only 1,100-metre ribbons in other models. “Our unique ribbon drive system eliminates failure prone dancer arms that take up critical space inside the ribbon cassette. This means that for comparable size printers, we can now offer a class-leading 1,200-metre ribbon inside the same form factor as our previous generation products.

This provides our customers maximum uptime between ribbon changeovers while simultaneously minimising the amount of space we take up on the line,” said Andy Millar, Videojet business unit manager. “In addition to the productivity benefits, there are process benefits from placing fewer supply orders and environmental benefits from producing less packaging waste.”

The right code every time

Common errors include codes that are one digit off, dates that don’t exist, codes on wrong products and typing errors. These simple but costly mistakes which can potentially damage a manufacturer’s brand and profit, are often a result of operator interaction. But they can be eliminated by improving that process.

The code assurance on the new printers help to foolproof and prevent mistakes, keeping customer production lines productive and ensuring brand integrity. The task of selecting the correct information to print onto products can be simplified further through the use of an optional USB scanner that can scan and select the appropriate print job information stored on the printer.
