Due to its climate, Canada is forced to import a large portion of its fruits and vegetables, which it gets from countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. It is now eyeing the Maghreb region for produce.
The export potential of the Maghreb is important according to the Ambassador of Canada in Algiers. Despite the distance, fruits and vegetables from the Maghreb could compete in Canada with agricultural products from South America and Caribbean if exports can increase.
A meeting to discuss business opportunities for the food industry was held in Algiers last month, as part of EnACT (Enhancing Arab Capacity for Trade) which aims to strengthen the trade capacity of its five members - Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Jordan.
