Hamza Industry Co. recently purchased another direct extrusion line from KraussMaffei Berstorff for its pipe production facility in Egypt. In an interview with International Plastics New – Middle East & Africa (IRNEA), Engr. Safa Abu Zeid, General Manager of Hamza Industry Co., talks about the company’s products and how its operations have been improved vastly by the addition of new production lines.

IRNEA: How would you describe Hamza Industry Co.? What are the products and where is the facility located?

Engr. Zeid: Hamza Industry Co. manufactures a wide range of pipes and piping system, as well as fittings, pipe networks and reinforced multilayer pipes. Our PE pipes solid pipes, single and multilayer pipes are applied in such sectors as drinking water, sewerage, agriculture, fire fittings system, natural gas and transportation. Founded in 1949, Hamza Industry has its head office in Cairo and we are regarded as one of the most innovative companies in the region with many years of experience and high quality standards in the construction industry.

Hamza AS pipes and fittings are the unique and advanced products for varied applications. We offer our customers quality service that starts from the product design, raw materials selection, actual production, and packaging of materials and handling/transport. All our products are produced at our facility located at 6th of October City in Egypt.

IRNEA: How long have you been using KraussMaffei Berstorff's machines? In your plant, what are the KraussMaffei machines do you have and use?

Engr. Zeid: We have been using KraussMaffei Berstorff pipe lines either for PE or PE pipes production for 6 years now. Hamza Industry Co. is a long-standing and devoted customer of KraussMaffei Berstorff, and has been using a KraussMaffei Berstorff direct extrusion line and other pipe extrusion equipment. To date, we have 4 KraussMaffei Berstorff lines in operation at our factory. These include: AS KMG 81-41/KME 45-30; KME 45-36 KME 45-36; KME 45-36 KME 60-36; and KMG 81-41 / KME 45-30.

Our most recent order comprises a KMG 81-40/R co-rotating twin-screw extruder as the main extruder for the filled middle layer, a KME 38-30 B/R co-extruder for the thin internal and external layers, the KM-RKW 73 three-layer pipehead and downstream units for calibration and cooling.

The system processes highly filled PP into pipes with a diameter ranging between 20 and 250 mm and at a maximum output rate of 700 kg/h./ line The pipe components are compounded using a special material weighing system and are extruded simultaneously as the finished pipe in the direct extrusion process.

IRNEA: What are the benefits of using such advanced machinery/technology for direct extrusion to your company? How does it help you meet your customers' requirements?

Engr. Zeid: Hamza is extremely impressed by the quality of the KraussMaffei Berstorff machines and the process engineering expertise offered by KraussMaffei Berstorff. Standardisation, spare parts availability, advanced operating methods and control for all of the production lines, minimised downtime and the latest automation technology are some of the benefits we derived which have supported our whole operation.

The direct extrusion line that we recently ordered will shortly come on stream at Hamza in Cairo where it will produce highly filled three-layer sewage pipes made of polypropylene. Direct extrusion is the combination of two process technologies, i.e. compounding and processing, in one step. With the direct extrusion systems from KraussMaffei Berstorff, the material is compounded in just one step and the product is simultaneously extruded.
